Concert Ensembles

MID WG

When students join the MHS Band program, they are placed into one of three concert band classes that meet daily as part of the six period academic schedule. Unlike middle school band, each of the three band classes has a mix of 9th-12th grade students, and they are ability based. Most freshman are placed into the Concert Band (intermediate), but some advanced players will be placed into the Symphonic Band (advanced) and Wind Ensemble (mastery). All students who sign up for band class will receive class placement materials and information at MHS, NMS and EPMS early in the spring. The class placement hearing is nothing to worry about; we have a place for everyone, regardless of ability or experience and want to make sure everyone is put into the correct class. Nobody will be “cut.”

Marching Band

All band students must sign up for band class to be eligible to participate in the extra-curricular Milton High School marching band. Marching band begins in July with practices at the school and at our marching band camp. Once school begins, the marching band rehearses after school from August through the end of football season in early November. While all prospective members are required to attend a few practice sessions in the spring, these are not formal “auditions” and nobody will be “cut.” The practice sessions are used to place each student on the appropriate drum (for percussion), give the students an opportunity to perform with the high school band, and play on a marching instrument (for brass players). For the colorguard (flags), the auditions will be used to get everyone familiar with the flag equipment used. To be a member of the colorguard, no experience or band class is required.

Percussion Ensemble

All 9th grade percussion students spend their first year as a member of the Milton High School Band program enrolled in the 9th grade percussion ensemble. Students study a wide variety of percussion ensemble literature and perform at various band concerts during the school year. Students in this class develop skills on all percussion instruments to prepare them for future placement in the Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble starting in their 10th grade year.

Jazz Band

The Milton High School Jazz Band is an auditioned group of trumpets, trombones, saxophones and rhythm section students who study a wide variety of jazz ensemble literature. The co-curricular ensemble rehearses weekly during the school day utilizing Milton's SOAR time, and is not credit bearing. The group performs 3-4 times each school year at a variety of venues in the Atlanta area.

Winterguard

All students interested in being a part of the Milton Winterguard must audition in November to be selected for the Varsity or Junior Varsity team. Practice begins in November and goes through Mid-April. To be a member of the Winterguard no prior experience or band class registration is necessary. Auditions are open to all students in 6th through 12th grade. Milton Winterguard competes in 2 circuits, Southern Association for Performing Arts (SAPA) and WGI regionals and WGI World Championships in Dayton, Ohio.

Indoor Drumline

After the conclusion of the fall marching season, all MHS marching band students are eligible to participate in the award-winning Milton Indoor Drumline (MID). Auditions are in November and practice begins in November and goes through Mid-April. Founded in 2006, this ensemble competes in the Georgia Indoor Percussion Association (GIPA) circuit and WGI regionals and WGI World Championships in Dayton, Ohio.
